Understanding Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)
As of Feb. 7, 2022, all new CDL applicants must complete ELDT prior to obtaining Commercial
Learners Permit, which includes:
Theory Training – Prepares you for written tests (online or in-person).
Range Training – Covers pre-trip inspections and basic vehicle handling.
Public Road Training – One-on-one sessions to build confidence behind the wheel
Steps to Get Your CDL:
Get Your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) – ELDT is required first.
Step 2 - Complete Theory Training
Complete Theory Training – Online or classroom sessions to prep for the written test.
Step 3 - Pass the Written Test
Pass the Written Test – Obtain your CLP.
One-on-one driving sessions for real-world experience.
Learn pre-trip inspections and vehicle handling.
Choosing the Right CDL License
For vehicles over 26,000 lbs with trailers over 10,000 lbs (also allows Class B driving).
For vehicles over 26,000 lbs with trailers under 10,000 lbs.
For passenger vehicles over 26,000 lbs,(16+ passengers).
